About

Big Crops, Small Spaces, Real Food

Grow Pocket Harvest exists for one reason: you don’t need a yard to grow your own vegetables. Renters, apartment dwellers, and anyone with a sunny balcony, windowsill, or bit of railing can grow real food in containers — you just need the right plant, the right pot, and a little guidance.

We call this the One Plant, One Pot, One Harvest method, and it’s not just a tagline — it’s the order every guide here follows. Start with a single plant in a single container, take it all the way to a real harvest, then build from there. Most people who quit on container gardening quit because they started five plants at once and lost track of all of them; one pot done well beats five pots half-watered.

This site is built for beginners. Every guide assumes you’re starting from zero: no gardening background, no acreage, no specialized equipment. What you will find is specific, practical advice — minimum container sizes, sunlight needs, how long until harvest, and the beginner mistakes worth avoiding (overwatering tops the list).

What You’ll Find Here

Guides are organized around five pillars: Balcony Greens, Pot & Tub Veggies, Windowbox Herbs, Pocket Vertical growing, and the soil-and-watering basics that tie it all together. Wherever you’re starting, there’s a next step here for you.

Who’s Writing This

Grow Pocket Harvest’s guides are written by Alex Rivers, who focuses on practical, no-nonsense advice for growing real food in containers — the right pot, the right plant, and no wasted effort, so your first harvest actually happens. See all of Alex’s guides.

About the name. Alex Rivers is a pen name used by the site’s owner, a home container gardener in the Southern Hemisphere, where the seasons are opposite to the US. For you, that means you can often see a crop growing in our pots before your own season for it comes round. We use a pen name for privacy, not to invent credentials: the advice is sourced as described below, and the real, unedited results from our own pots go in the Pocket Harvest Test Garden log.

How We Write Our Guides

Where the advice comes from. Our growing advice is built on published research from US university extension services (including the University of Maryland, University of Minnesota, University of Illinois and Clemson extension programs) and the USDA. These are the same sources Master Gardener volunteers are trained on. Our newer guides link to their sources directly, and we’re adding sources to older guides as we review each one.

How a guide is made. We use AI writing tools to help research and draft our guides. Every number that matters (minimum pot size, hours of sun, days to harvest, frost temperatures) is checked against published extension sources before a guide goes live. Where sources disagree, we give you the range rather than pick one.

Who it’s written for. Guides are written for US growers, so temperatures are in °F and timing follows USDA hardiness zones. Where it makes a real difference, we add a note for other climates.

How products are chosen. Product picks follow the growing requirements in each guide (container size, drainage, light output) and the maker’s published specs. We don’t accept payment for placement, and we don’t say we’ve tested something unless we have.

Keeping guides current. We revisit guides as the seasons change and as better information turns up, and update them when something is out of date.

About the images. Photos in the Test Garden are real, unedited photos of our own pots. Some featured images and illustrations elsewhere on the site are AI-generated to show a setup or an idea. They aren’t photos of a specific product we tested.

Spot a mistake? If something in a guide looks wrong or doesn’t match what happened in your own pots, please tell us. Every correction gets checked, and fixed if we got it wrong.

A Note on Recommendations

Some pages link to products we think are genuinely useful for small-space growing — containers, soil, self-watering gear. Some of those are affiliate links, which means we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Full details are on our Affiliate Disclosure page. We only recommend products we’d be happy to use ourselves, chosen on specs, verified buyer reviews and extension guidance, never on commission rates.
